What is AutoCAD?
AutoCAD is a computer-aided design and drafting software application.
Like many other CAD programs, AutoCAD is used by architects, engineers, drafters, and other engineers. An AutoCAD drawing is made up of objects and layers. Objects are like boxes with dimensions and properties that make them unique. Layers are like pages of a book, they group objects. These groups of objects are what the drawing is about. Layers make it easy to keep track of information.
Unlike paper-and-pencil drafting, CAD software is for creating drawings on computers. CAD software includes several programs: AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, DWG Converter, Inventor, Microstation, MicroStation DGN Converter, Revit, ROUTER, and others. AutoCAD LT is a version of AutoCAD that runs on older computers, and cannot create any drawings. This is why AutoCAD LT is only available on computers that are less than one year old.
AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT have many similarities. These similarities make it easy to transition from one type of CAD to another. The most important differences between the two programs are the following:
AutoCAD is a computer-aided design (CAD) program that is primarily used to make technical drawings for computer hardware, for example, a flat-screen television. CAD software allows users to draw, edit, and analyze 2D and 3D designs. AutoCAD is used by architects, civil engineers, mechanical engineers, and others.
AutoCAD LT is a 2D drafting application that includes all the features of AutoCAD but also includes an object repository (libraries), and features that simplify many of the processes of 2D drafting. In addition to being used for 2D drafting, AutoCAD LT can import and export 2D drawing data to and from other applications, such as MicroStation, MicroStation DGN Converter, and Revit.
What are the tools in AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT?
The tools used in AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT are similar. In AutoCAD, the tools used for drafting, drawing, and editing are on the ribbon toolbar. In AutoCAD LT, these tools are located in the toolbox.

Autocad UI changes
In October 2012 Autodesk introduced a new user interface (UI) which was made available through the 2011.1 major release of AutoCAD. The new UI is called RapidFusion. The new user interface is designed to allow greater flexibility to the user and includes new tools and features that are easier to use. In addition, the new AutoCAD UI can be used with a variety of different styles (look and feel) such as those seen on the market with applications like MS Office and PowerPoint. The new UI is also flexible, allowing the user to adapt it to their own user interface, and can be customized for different market sectors and target groups. The new UI is also “expandable”, meaning that users can add their own tools and features without the need for paid licenses. The new UI will not affect the ability to edit and save drawings. The new UI is available to Autodesk’s Autocad 2014 and AutoCAD 2013.
Autodesk AutoCAD releases are binary compatible with the previous versions of the software, such as AutoCAD LT 2011. AutoCAD LT 2007 can only import, open, or export drawings created with AutoCAD LT 2007, as well as support for drawing templates. The current release of AutoCAD LT 2015 supports both AutoCAD LT 2011 and AutoCAD LT 2007. In contrast, AutoCAD 2011 cannot be installed on the same computer as previous versions, or vice versa, unless a suitable AutoCAD license can be obtained for compatibility.
Autodesk released AutoCAD in 1987 as the first entirely user-customizable CAD software. Its goal was to simplify the design and drafting process. In 1990, Autodesk introduced version 1.1 of AutoCAD, with support for scaling and rotation, and the ability to browse large-scale drawings. AutoCAD 2.0 was released in 1991, introducing advanced features such as freeze and hatch. In 1992, AutoCAD’s price was lowered from $2,500 to $500. In 1994, the first AutoCAD Architecture (ACAD-A) was released. AutoCAD 3000 and AutoCAD/Map 3D were released in 1996, with full 3D design tools. AutoCAD for Windows NT introduced a server architecture for managing and sharing large-scale drawing.
AutoCAD 2000 and AutoCAD 2001 introduced drawing layers, and Auto

What’s New in the AutoCAD?
Markup Assist now automatically converts your drawings into your native CAD format, such as AutoCAD LT or AutoCAD.
Note: Markup Assist automatically converts drawings to AutoCAD. The AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD LT 2020 enhancements that require a new API will not work with Markup Assist.
When you cancel a subscription, Autodesk acknowledges the cancellation and any previously-purchased licenses are returned to Autodesk’s inventory.

If you have a subscription, you can share files and folders between your subscription and PC-based apps.
When sharing files from the subscription, you can designate them as files you want to share.
When sharing folders from the subscription, you can designate folders that you want to share with other users.
Notes on file sharing:
File sharing is not enabled for free or enterprise subscriptions, but is available in the personal and academic subscription options.
Support for Azure File Sync:
Autodesk offers a new tool that delivers file sync and web hosting to Microsoft Azure. This means you can collaborate from anywhere in the world in real-time with your teammates or with a client, using shared cloud-based computing resources.
Support for external USB storage:
Autodesk allows users to easily add an external hard drive or USB stick to a subscription by using the Device Manager.
Notes on USB storage:
Adding an external hard drive or USB stick to your AutoCAD subscription is not recommended. If you add an external USB drive to your subscription, the drive may be used as a repository for drawings and files, and be shared with other users. When sharing external USB devices, you may be exposing your data to malware.
We designed a new user interface that is optimized for mobile, starting with AutoCAD LT 2020. AutoCAD LT 2020 is an extension of the AutoCAD LT features introduced in the 2019 release and adds support for 2D drafting and engineering. You can start editing existing files or open new files with new tasks.
Note: The features of AutoCAD LT 2020 are not available when you’re using AutoCAD for the first time on a mobile device or tablet.
System Requirements For AutoCAD:
An Intel Core-2 Duo CPU or AMD Phenom x3 CPU or better.
